Explore Mid Canterbury's Lord Of The Rings Scenery
+ Mt Sunday, Sharpin Falls Track, Ōpuke Thermal Pools
Big skies, wild landscapes, and a hot soak to finish — this private tour explores the spectacular high country made famous by The Lord of the Rings, with short hikes, a scenic picnic, and time to unwind.
Depart Christchurch at 8:00am, travelling across the Canterbury Plains to the village of Staveley, on the edge of Hakatere Conservation Park. Stretch your legs on the Sharplin Falls Track — a gentle, one-hour walk through native bush to a beautiful waterfall.
Grab a fresh coffee and choose your own picnic lunch from the Staveley Store, then journey deep into Lord of the Rings country. Your destination is Mt Sunday, the dramatic filming location for Edoras — capital of Rohan. A short walk to the summit offers panoramic views of this striking glacial valley.
On the return leg, stop in Methven for a well-earned soak at Ōpuke Thermal Pools. Enjoy two hours in the adults-only Tranquillity Pools, complete with robes, towels, and service from the swim-up bar.
Arrive back in Christchurch around 5:30pm, relaxed and recharged.
